These are systems designed for people who want a surround effect without putting speakers around the room. They create a wider sound scale than the TV alone and give the impression of surround sound without the rear speakers. For the clutter conscious, these are a very good option.The most popular option for true surround sound, entailing 3 speakers at the front, 2 speakers behind and a subwoofer creating a circle of sound around you. Each speaker works independently, and only activate when required. For example, if a train comes from behind the scene to the front, the sound will do the same.This is the same concept as 5.1 sound with an additional rear speaker (in 6.1 called surround back) or two rear speakers (in 7,1, called surround back left and right)
